In the late 80’s a man by the name of Glen Cannon had a vision for a girls group that would make music, money, and history with their impressive harmony and kid like charm. The group known as The Honey’s, was formed with three young girls, Ieisha, Summer, and the youngest, Porche. Although young in age these girls were impressive in their ability to sing and dance. The Honey’s proved their ability to perform in 1987 with Porche just five years old. They took the stage at Detroit’s Latin Quarters and rocked the house as the youngest act set to perform that evening. I can remember it as if it was yesterday we took the stage with gold tailor made mini dresses, black paten leather shoes, and banana clips in our hair. Although nervous we sang Janet Jackson’s what have you done for me lately and a song which we recorded titled “I don’t want to grow up” written by Harold Gram. After that show it was evident that Glen was on to something and with the proper grooming, lessons, and guidance we could be something special. As we got older it was apparent a change was needed, at six and seven the youngest members voices were not developed enough to carry lead vocals so Glen set out to find a fourth member. He found a young talented and beautiful girl by the name of Kelly Scott. She brought a sense of maturity as the oldest member and a sound that was different. Together we recorded “Don’t Cry”, and “How Low Can You Go”. The success of our first LP was cut short with the news of Kelly’s pregnancy. She took time off from the group after years of sweat and tears to raise her son. As a group we couldn’t stand by and wait we needed a member to fill that fourth spot. We found a soulful singer by the name of Carla Price from South West Detroit. Carla fit right in to our sisterhood and within months we were making music. The Honey’s traveled to many cities and states performing we had fun every step of the way and there was never a better feeling than being on stage doing what you loved to do and listening to the crowd chant your name. As with most girl groups we began to grow apart after years of living together as families tend to do we took a break. Years later the original three, Ieisha, Summer, and Porche decided to bring the group back together and this time add a fifth member. We held auditions in the basement of our rehearsal hall where girls like Dawn and Lisa auditioned. At the end of the day Lisa was the best for our group. She was calm girl with an eccentric sound. Together we recorded “Tap Dis” and “Rescue Me”, a beautiful ballad written by Lathan. In my mind we were finally on our way to superstardom. However, singing and performing no longer was our dream it was what it started as a vision of another person and because we no longer felt that fire we once did in the beginning we didn’t allow our career the opportunity to go far. We simply walked away from it all and lived as normal teenagers do. We finished school, some went off to college, some even have families, but the truth is we will never be the same and we can never be normal. Everyday I hear a Destiny’s Child song I will be forever reminded of what could have been if we would have stayed the course. If I could say one thing to the 5 year old in 1987 I would whisper to her stay strong no matter what. When she is sweating and crying from rehearsing for hours straight I would tell her press through, and when she is ready to give up and walk away from it all after years of a stagnant career I will shout to her Don’t. It is difficult to stay the course when you see very little return but it’s even harder to watch so many others come after you and do what you could not. The five of our lives will be forever changed and there will always be a yearning to be seen and heard in song, dance, or poetry. Although distant Ieisha, Summer, Porche, Kelly, Carla, and Lisa will be forever Honye’s.
